The Ex-actress and Business Celebrity Dead at 42
|
Former actress and business celebrity Chen Xiaoxu passed away on May 13 at 42 years old in Shenzhen, the Chinese Southern city in China after battle with breast cancer. Ms. Chen became a celebrity in China in the 1980s after being the actress in a leading role-Lin Daiyu in the TV soap "Dream of the Red Mansion". Following this popular role, however, Chen Xiaoxu did not pursue an acting career. "The character (Lin Daiyu) opened a window for me, but shut a door," Chen said -- the fame of the character was such that it was very difficult for her to get other roles in other TV series. She disappeared from public view for several years after re-catching people's attention as a successful businesswoman and billionaire in advertising. She was listed as an economic celebrity in 2005. Earlier this year, the low-key star stirred up a media buzz when she was tonsured and became a nun. She announced she would leave business life and concentrated on Buddhist studies at the monastery. Sensitive and fond of literature, she has always been regarded as a "real Lin Daiyu". As Netizens said on sina.com, "Lin Daiyu is not a worldly person, and neither is Chen Xiaoxu". The charity foundation, set up on May 15 in the name of Chen Xiaoxu with an initial fund of 50 million yuan (6.4 million U.S. dollars), will help students from impoverished families and patients who cannot afford medical treatment. |
